Piano Repairs

Fixing the faults, big or small.

A piano’s action is a marvel of engineering, containing thousands of parts. With so many moving pieces, it is completely natural for components to wear down, break, or become misaligned through regular use or changes in the weather.

Common Running Repairs

Most mechanical issues can be diagnosed and fixed directly in your home during a routine service. Common issues I regularly repair across London include:

  • Sticking Keys: Often caused by expanded wood in humid weather, or small objects (like pencils or coins) falling between the keys.
  • Ringing Notes: Caused by a damper failing to press firmly against the string after you let go of the key.
  • Squeaking Pedals: Fixed by lubricating the metal trapwork and replacing worn felt.

Restringing and Snapped Strings

Occasionally, an older or heavily oxidised string may snap during playing or tuning. Replacing a treble string (the plain steel wire) is usually a quick fix. However, the thicker copper-wound bass strings are custom-made for every individual piano. If a bass string snaps, I will take careful measurements, have a bespoke replacement manufactured by a specialist string-maker, and return to fit it perfectly into your instrument.
